Stop the bus! Where are the territories?!
Wolves move from place to place based on where their food supply is. A wolf pack can inhabit a land for as long as their food supply is there. Eliminating actual "territories" and such creates oodles amounts of room for pack-to-pack encounters (and conflict) and other encounters which make things more exciting!
So if where the packs are located based on food, how do we know which areas have it?
We'll keep you posted on that. All critical information (season, etc.) will be posted on the main page. There is a large herd of caribou that usually populates the island, as well as a smaller population of deer (and of course fish and other smaller critters). Generally, the wolf packs will follow those two sources of food, though.
Can the wolves/dogs talk?
They can indeed talk, feel emotion, and think. This game is for writers, and it isn't much fun to write if you can't let your imagination flow freely, right? That's why we encourage you to create unique, flawed characters. Just have fun with it.
Can they have magical powers too?
No. The only unrealistic part of this game is the talking/feeling/thinking, and the plot lines created...to some extent.
So, sled dogs, eh? What kinds can I join?
Yes indeedy, SLED DOGS! You can join purebreds or mixes, but they must be working dogs and dogs fit for the north. No small dogs and no dogs with thin fur. This means if you want a more unique breed you will have to put some research into it.
Can I join a hybrid?
Hybrids are strictly forbidden. Why? People abuse the privilege. A select few people will be permitted but not for a long while. Hybrids are not the focus of the RPG.
I just joined a dog... where do I go now?
Post your dog at "The Forlorn." It's the kennel that the new shipments arrive at. Strays are permitted, but only once every so often.
Can my dog go wild and join a pack?
No. The dog would probably not survive on its own in the wild anyways, and the wolf packs will not take in a dog who smells of humans. They know to stay away from the town.
Can my wolf wander the town?
No. Only under extreme conditions will wolves come so close to the town that they become a nusance. If there is no food to be found they might be pushed to those extremes, or if they aquire rabies; otherwise no.
So, where can the citizens of Kaono come from?
Generally, they come from Canada, with some from the Unite States, Russia, Sweden and some other colder climate European countries. Most who come here are here for a more rural way of life and most likely grew up in the north and know about the cold.
Why are there are only four packs at the moment?
For the obvious reasons. But as the population of the four packs grow, the alphas will be forced to chase some wolves away, to keep their numbers relatively low. When that happens, we'll offer one or two of those exiled wolves the chance to start their own pack.
How will the ranks be established in the wolf packs?
Ranks will done according to how real wolves establish them; through looks, growls and stances. However, for the game's sake and our own sanity, we're going to set some small restrictions.
Wolves may continuely 'test' the higher ranking wolf, as they tend to keep an eye out for weakness, age, etc. But we'd ask that you only challenge the wolf one rank higher than yours occasionally. The ranks among the subordinates will most probably change daily.
Please remember that wolves cannot afford to spend all their time fighting. Subtle displays of dominance and submission is all that's needed for social stability... It is very rare that there are big, violent scuffles and stubborn assholes within the tight family bond the pack creates. So spare us on the "I'm a dominant, gonna-take-over-the-pack" shit with your characters...playing the submissive good wolfie is fun too.
Can our wolves have mates?
They can "favour" another wolf, but they can't mate unless they're given permission by the alpha pair- which, might we remind you, isn't something you can ask for. The alphas will obviously know if there are other mates within the pack, so come breeding season, they might have another pair mate instead. You just have to wait and see. There is no descriptive breeding. The owners will speak to the RPers of the breeding pair and the stats will be posted on the OOC Board.
How is time measured here?
One season is about four to six weeks. We'll keep you posted on the main page. It differes because we all have lives and some times during the year are much harder to get internet access and to find actual time to post!
What about the life-span for wolves?
Ten (10) to twelve (12) is considered near-death here... So if an Alpha approaches that age (or near it), get ready for some serious challenges going on!
Okay... but I still have total control over the life and death of my character, right?
No. In an environment like this, death is always waiting on the doorstep. For humans, racing is a dangerous sport - especially on an island so cut off from the outside world. Dogs can die in fights (sled dogs are meant to be tough, and its survival of the fittest), and wolves are even more succeptible to illness as well as fights and survival is not always a guarantee. If your character dies, please do not complain - it is only a game, and you can always make a new character!
Why can I only have a maximum of six characters?
Wanderlust is a big site. There are a lot of members, and we do not need transparent characters running amok. Create characters that you are passionate about, give them depth and make them seem tangible. The characters you really love are generally the ones you favour in posting, anyways. Do not make a new character because a team needs another dog, or because a pack needs a new member. We don't want any "filler" characters.
PLEASE NOTE: New members should NOT rush to join as many characters as they can. Start with one, get it involved, and then only consider another character when you have a feel for the game and know how much you can handle. Wanderlust is fairly engaging with its plotlines, and often people make the mistake of underestimating that, and then end up abandoning characters. For the sake of our sanity, only join a maximum of two characters over the period the first two weeks or so.
Nooo! Someone's using the name I wanted to join as!
Too bad! Sorry, but for the sake of keeping our sanity, it's just easier if no two characters are named the same thing. Even if they are different species, it just makes it easier to have all characters under different names.
